ATLANTIS: Lost Continent or Cautionary Tale of Hubris?

One of the greatest mysteries on our planet is that of the construction of pyramids.  Not just those in Egypt but the ones of Central and South America, Cambodia and the rest of the world.  There are those who claim it was extra-terrestrials, some who claim it was the work of slaves and others who say that it was the work of the long-lost Atlanteans.  Even renowned psychic Edgar Cayce claimed that beneath the statue of the Sphinx there is a chamber containing all the historical texts and records that remain about the supposed greatest race of humans ever to inhabit the Earth, saved from Atlantis before its demise.

Of course if you were to actually suggest to an Egyptian that their ancestors were instructed in their architecture by the Atlanteans in a manner similar to a scientist teaching sign language to a clumsy gorilla there would understandably be some push-back.  In many interviews and books Egyptian historians bristle at the idea that the ancient Egyptians were incapable of creating perhaps the most famous man-made structures on the planet.  They will tell you that the very notion of a civilization so advanced that there is no longer any trace of them building tombs for rulers of other nations thousands of miles from their own nation is laughable.

If the Atlanteans did exist, what happened to them?  Surely there would be more left of them than the cryptic writings of Plato’s Timaeus Critias in 360 BC describing a naval power “in front of the Pillars of Hercules” that perished in a “single day and night of misfortune” never to be heard from again.  And what kind of cataclysm is capable of destroying an entire continent and literally erasing it from the surface of the Earth?  No recorded storm, oceanic tempest or volcanic explosion would be able to do such a thing.  And if there was some sort of extra-terrestrial impact such as a meteorite or asteroid, there would be mention of such a thing in the writings of other cultures around the world because even back then there is no way such a thing would have gone unnoticed.

The first thing that needs to be done is to explain what Plato was referring to as the “Pillars of Hercules”.  In this case, the reference is between two massive rock formations – Spain’s Gibraltar and Morocco’s Jebel Musa.  There is in fact a sunken island known as Spartel in this region, but based on every expedition attempting in vain to discover otherwise, Spartel’s existence was not consistent with the description of a “Bronze-age society” that existed on Atlantis.  There is no evidence in the ruin of Spartel that they possessed such knowledge.

Which brings us to a final point – did Atlantis really ever exist?  Did a race of people so far advanced that they were able to travel the world imparting their knowledge without even leaving traces of themselves ever really exist?  Some say that the destruction of Atlantis was not a result of a naturally-occurring phenomenon but instead a result of their attempt to create a powerfully destructive new weapon that succeeded only in annihilating themselves, not their enemies.  Others say that it was the vengeful hand of God that smote the Atlanteans from His creation as a result of their polytheistic ways and their superior firepower and intelligence that threatened the world.  And still others contend that the Atlanteans were able to slip the surly bonds of Earth and travel into space, destroying any trace of their civilization to keep other from discovering their secrets.  What’s the truth?  Was Atlantis real, or is it nothing more than a story made up to explain things that even today we are struggling to comprehend?

You decide.
