You can celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, the Winter Solstice, New Year’s, and Chinese New Year, because feng shui is all about moving and celebrating all kinds of energy.
Since the energy in your home affects your health and well-being, here are nine things you can do to help with your holiday chi:
- Clear out unused toys and items. Before the tree and new gifts are given, take time to go through each room and clear out old, broken, and unused items.
- Put the Christmas tree up early. Research has shown that people who put up their trees earlier are happier, and the twinkling lights of the tree naturally put us in a better mood.
- Placement is important. Select a spot where the tree isn’t blocking your path and access to things like cabinets you might need.
- Buy a live tree. Consider buying a tree with roots so you can plant it outside after the holidays, which adds to your karma points. Many communities have an “adopt a tree” program where you return your tree in January so it can be planted outside with other trees, and then you can decide if you want it back next year.
- Use gold ornaments. The color gold represents wealth and opportunity.
- Everyone decorates. Have everyone in the family place at least one decoration on the tree. This will help to contribute to better family connections.
- Presents. Never let your tree stand without presents; it’s like having a wallet with no cash. Both are bad symbolism.
- Place lots of heartfelt gifts under the tree. This year, more than ever, is the perfect time to forgo extravagant, expensive gifts in exchange for thoughtful ones. Write a meaningful letter to each member of your family and tell them how grateful you are for them and why. Put the letter in a big box symbolizing all your gratitude. Go to the Dollar Store and buy playing cards and games so that after you open your gifts, your family can continue to enjoy each other. Baked goods under the tree are always welcome in our home.
- Keep the lights on throughout the night. Lights are the most powerful way of activating the fire element, which will bring happiness and good fortune. So, if it is safe to do so, leave the lights on, symbolizing that you are lighting the way for opportunities next year. – https://michellecromer.com/holiday-chi-christmas-tree-feng-shui/
What about the tree?
As Suzanne Butler from Harmonizing Energies Feng Shui explains, ‘When people think Christmas tree placement, they’re usually worried about aesthetics, power points, or where the dog or cat can’t knock it over.’ But, in terms of Feng Shui, the tree isn’t just about decorations. Instead, she highlights, ‘It’s an activation device for the festive season and the year ahead. Where you place that symbol of the season can either pour luck into your home, or quietly siphon it away.’
For that reason, the very best place to put your Christmas tree in 2025 is in the South and Southeast areas of your living room. while this may seem unnecessary, or even a little extra, with a little know-how, it makes perfect sense. Most specifically, it’s because in Feng Shui, the Southeast governs Wealth and Prosperity, which is why Feng Shui wealth corners exist. ‘A Christmas tree is a powerful Wood element feature, and in this sector, Wood is the star of the show,’ advises Suzanne. ‘When you place your tree here, you’re essentially feeding the area that governs financial flow. Think of it as fertilising the “money corner” with sparkle, intention, and upward Wood energy. It’s not just wealth, either, as the South also relates to fame and reputation, meaning how visible you are in the world and the recognition you receive for your work.
Feng Shui consultant Suzanne also has strong feelings about placing the tree in the North of your home. ‘The North sector of a home is connected to the Water element, which governs career and life path,’ she says. ‘Water is powerful, but it’s picky about what you mix into it.
‘Your Christmas tree is a strong Wood element. In the elemental cycle, Wood drains Water. Place your tree in the North, and you tip the balance into a conflict that can show up as:
- Money leaking instead of growing: ‘This could look like the oven ceasing to work whilst you are cooking the duck fat potatoes’ for your Christmas party recipes.
- Career setbacks or stagnation: ‘A retrenchment on Christmas Eve is not ideal.’
- Feeling directionless or overwhelmed: ‘A lack of desire to head back to the office on December 27.’
Why a blocked tree makes for a difficult Christmas
A poorly placed tree can change or sabotage the energy of your home, leaving you needing to fix your home’s traffic flow, which becomes even more of an issue if your tree blocks walkways or doorways, and disrupts Qi and can cause stress, irritability, stagnation, and unexpected delays or obstacles in life.
‘Your tree should feel like an invitation, not an obstacle course,’ she says. ‘If you’re having to sidestep it like you’re dodging a startled reindeer, the Qi is definitely struggling, and no one wants to sit in the doorway to open their gifts. In essence, your tree will go where there is space, but there are plenty of things you can do to enhance your prosperity and luck for the season by way of decorating to support your home’s natural energetic blueprint.’ – https://currently.att.yahoo.com/att/move-christmas-tree-south-feng-050000277.html
After you’ve set your intentions, it’s time to think about the Christmas ornaments we place on or around the tree:
- To boost your quality of life, choose ornaments and figurines in calming colors such as green and brown.
- To improve your financial status, place beautifully wrapped presents under the tree to represent abundance. Wrap them in red and gold wrapping paper since these colors symbolize financial richness, good fortune, and prosperity.
- To increase your family’s happiness, you can include handmade ornaments by your children, souvenirs from your travels, etc. Anything that makes you happy!
With your decorations, you’ll also want to:
- Make sure your tree lights are bright! Change the bulbs that are burnt out, or dim and dull.
- Find lights that glow and sparkle so your tree comes alive with new energies. Fairy lights are perfect for this as they come with different settings that let you change the “look” of the tree depending on the energy of the day.
- Discard faded and old decorations.
- Decorate the tree with natural material as much as possible (i.e. cones, crystals) to bring in the nurturing earth and wood elements. This is a great option if you have an artificial tree. – https://momentumfengshui.com/how-to-use-feng-shui-at-christmas/
The Front Door
Your front entrance is the main point where energy flows into your home. The front doorway is where this vital energy, “Chi” or “Qi” flows into your home and life. To heighten the flow of energy into your home for Feng Shui at Christmas time, we recommend:
- Decorating your front pathway and your doorway with Christmas lights to keep it bright and to increase the energy flow into your home. Not to mention, it’s festive and fun!
- Wipe down or wash your front door with salt water.
- Hang a wreath or bells on the doorknob. We recommend a wreath of pine branches and pine cones with gold and red details.
- Tidy up your porch or walkway to remove clutter, snow, or ice. Pay special attention to old and dead plants in planters which should be removed as well.
- Add a festive greeter such as a pot of greens, a waving Santa, or a wagon filled with faux presents to catch the eye, set the tone for your home, and uplift your visitors’ energy.
- Lay a festive doormat.
When decorating the front entrance, we recommend these festive colors:
- Red lights which symbolize prosperity and luck.
- Green lights to symbolize stability, serenity, and healing.
- Gold and silver tones to represent financial richness and good fortune.
- Brown colors to represent grounding, self-care, and stability.
- Blue colors to symbolize prosperity and abundance such as increased income and money flowing into the home.
These colors and Feng Shui tips can also work for other Christmas decorations in your home, including your Christmas tree. – https://momentumfengshui.com/how-to-use-feng-shui-at-christmas/
Remember:
When it comes to Feng Shui, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. The goal for Christmas feng shui is to create balance in the space, which means paring back the Christmas light ideas, or mixing them with more relaxed elements to help counteract the overwhelming fire element, ‘festive decor is synonymous with twinkling lights, candles, roaring fires, and rich red colors, all of which carry more Yang energy and activate the element of fire. White, silver, gold, even black decorations can help to balance out the fiery energy of traditional Christmas decor schemes.
Put your tree in a place of prominence. This means placing it towards the center of your home or the entryway to help welcome your family in and encourage them to gather around – just be sure that it is not blocking any main walkways to maintain the flow of people and energy. The tree is a symbol of family, making it perfect for promoting good luck and positive energy during the festive season.
While keeping the energy flowing is a must during the holiday season, a common Feng Shui mistake to avoid at home is stripping your home of any personality in favor of keeping surfaces clear and free from clutter. Decorate with family mementos, sparkly lights, and meaningful decorations.
Sharp and pointed objects are some of the unluckiest items to have in your home for Feng Shui.
When it comes to Christmas decor, it is therefore important to do away with any harsh tree toppers or pointed baubles, keeping your Christmas tree theme on the softer side for positive energy.
When putting out decorations, you want to avoid setting anything up that means there is difficulty opening the front door.
