The new year comes with new resolutions and goals. Whatever your goal is, there are a few New Year’s Eve superstitions that are said to help you keep your resolutions in check and bring good fortune in the coming year.

Stay awake for the New Year – You can go to sleep right afterwards but be sure to hail it in.

When coming home from a celebration – the man is supposed to walk in the door first as traditionally they are considered the breadwinner. Nowadays, the person considered the breadwinner goes first regardless of gender.

A kiss at midnight – Some believe the person you kiss at midnight on New Years Eve will be your life-long. Well scoff if you must but it worked for me!

Eat twelve grapes at midnight – One for each month of the upcoming year should bring you a year’s worth of luck.

Make sure your cupboards are not bare – Fill up your cabinets with food. Believe it or not, in some cities this has become quite the fad.

Keep money in your wallet or pocket – That means cash not credit cards or gas cards or those of like ilk. CASH -if your wallet is full at midnight you will have money for the rest of the year.

Don’t clean your house on New Years Day – The story goes that you will wash away all your luck for the upcoming year.

On the paranormal front – Open your windows and doors for a few minutes – This lets out the old year energies and any evil spirits.

Also on the paranormal front – Make Noise! Lots of it – it scares away evil.

Eat collard greens and black eyed peas – The greens represent cash and the peas coins that can come your way.

Make note of the first person who enters your door – It is believed that dark-haired males crossing your threshold first are fortuitous for you. (No you can’t plan it. It has to happen naturally).

Southerners have a good one, On the 31st you should put a piece of money outside under your doormat. After midnight you should go outside, retrieve your money, and bring it into your home. You can only bring the money you put out, in.

Don’t eat lobster, crab or chicken – Especially chicken. It has wings meaning your luck can fly out the door. Lobsters walk backwards taking your luck with them and crabs walk sideways and you’ll lose track of luck and cash.

Carry an empty suitcase – Walk around your house for a while with an empty suitcase. You must also invite good adventures out loud while doing so.

Be a little witchy – Write down your hopes, dreams and wishes for the New Year then burn the paper you wrote it on. This ensures they come true.

Start a new calendar – Throw away any old calendars and open up new ones and put them on display.

Wear a brand new piece of clothing, usually a shirt, on New Years day. It represents a new beginning and wearing something worn previously may carry over negative energies.
The item is usually brightly colored, often yellow or green which are colors traditionally associated with prosperity and growth.

What are you thinking? – Be mindful of what it is you do on New Years Day. Whatever activity or mindset you are in may well dictate what you will be doing in the New Year.
