In religious and paranormal belief systems, it is widely held that demons can and do impersonate ghosts. This concept is particularly prevalent in Christian theology and certain paranormal investigative circles. Often posing as loved ones or helpful guides to lead individuals away from God or into harm. These “unholy ghosts” are seen as counterfeits of divine spirits, using illusions, mimicry, and manipulation to create false mystical experiences, making it difficult to tell the difference without discernment.

  • Deception: A primary goal is to lead people astray, making them believe in false spirituality or turn away from true faith,.
  • Control & Torment: They seek to oppress, intimidate, and control humans, fulfilling their destructive nature.
  • Counterfeiting: They mimic good spiritual experiences (like angels or the Holy Spirit) to sow confusion and draw people to themselves

How They Might Appear:

  • As familiar spirits or deceased loved ones.
  • As “spirit guides” offering seemingly wise counsel.
  • Creating illusions, manipulating senses, or producing phenomena like voices or objects moving.

Signs of a Demonic Presence (vs. a Ghost/Spirit):

  • Confusion & Fear: A spirit that brings deep anxiety, confusion, or depression is often considered demonic.
  • Focus on Self/Occult: Fascination with morbid curiosity, the occult, or an excessive focus on personal spiritual experiences.
  • Falsehood: A spirit that lies or promotes false doctrines.
  • Pride: An anxious desire to publicize spiritual experiences.

Many Christian denominations teach that “ghosts” of deceased humans do not wander the earth because souls go directly to judgment after death. Consequently, any spiritual entity appearing as a dead person is often interpreted as a demonic spirit or “unholy ghost” masquerading to deceive, intimidate, or lead people away from God.

Demons are described as “masters of deceit” who can mimic the physical appearance, voice, mannerisms, and specific memories of a deceased individual to convince the living of their identity. Because demons are viewed as ancient spirits, they may possess knowledge of a person’s life that appears “proof” of their identity.

In some traditions, these entities are called “familiar spirits” because they are “familiar” with the person they are imitating.

While ghosts are often portrayed as neutral or confused, impersonating demons are typically described as having malicious intent, seeking to cause fear, oppression, or spiritual harm.

Paranormal investigators sometimes suggest that if an entity is capable of significant physical interaction (like moving heavy objects or causing physical harm), it is more likely to be a demonic entity rather than a human ghost.

Historically, the Catholic Church has allowed for the possibility of souls in Purgatory appearing as ghosts, whereas the Protestant Reformation popularized the idea that all such sightings were demonic deceptions.

From a scientific standpoint, neither ghosts nor demons have been proven to exist, with many sightings attributed to psychological factors like sleep paralysis or environmental phenomena.

In essence, the idea is that demons are highly deceptive entities that can masquerade as anything, including the spirits of the dead, to achieve their malevolent purposes, making discernment crucial.

A true story Example – Bryan Colemanhttps://www.quora.com/When-a-demon-impersonates-a-ghost-what-is-one-distinct-smell-it-sometimes-uses-to-create-an-illusion

A sorcerer showed up one time without warning, and he had all the props. Usually, the demons show up as a disembodied head—a projection or impression, but this guy was a full-blown 3D projection, mobile and very active, similar to a holograph or hologram with all of his dots…which means looking as real as I am now…

He shows up, appears in my living room, hanging onto the back of my work-out bench. I have a bench with a squat rack in the back, and he was just hanging on the back of the squat rack. He had accessories with him, I knew they weren’t real, but it still was disturbing. He had two little girls clinging to his left leg, about 2 yrs. old, and a snake curling around his right leg…just a small garden snake. In his mouth was a lizard that was wiggling, half in and half out with the tail wiggling out of his mouth…

The two little blonde headed girls, about 2 yrs old were softly whimpering, saying, “daddy, daddy, I’m scared.” He looked down at them, took the lizard out of his mouth and said to them…”be calm, daddy’s right here and everything is going to be okay.” He also smelled like burning hair—like a perm, rotten eggs and sulfur, all rolled into one, which lingered in my apartment for two days after he left. That is the only demon I’ve ever smelled, and it wasn’t pretty. True story, so help me God…
