The Angels of Noah’s Day

The angels of Noah’s day who left their proper place in heaven to come to earth materialized human bodies for themselves. It was by these unnatural fleshly bodies that they produced the Nephilim, hybrid creatures that were unusually fierce and violent and, if Jewish tradition is correct, gigantic. By their rebellion these angels became demons[1], and their fun was cut short by the Flood, which destroyed their wicked sons and wives. They simply dematerialized their bodies and swanned off back to heaven, to face punishment for their sins. (Genesis 6:1–4; Jude 6)

This was distinct from the tricks of the demons in later days when, it seems, forbidden any more from materializing flesh they instead would – and certainly still do – possess people, that is, enter into them by force and influence or even take over that person’s mind and actions. Such persons are typically driven mad by the experience, or in some cases receive some sort of “gift”, albeit at great cost, in a sort of Mephistophelean deal; I have personal experience of this, including persons contacted in the preaching work who were able to tell things about the person who called on them that they couldn’t possibly have known, an interested person who started studying the Bible whose Bible would be red hot to the touch in an effort to prevent her from reading it, a family of demonised people the child of which was able to lift the piano from the floor and a fellow who made an agreement with a demon to enter his body in exchange for material success; shortly thereafter he started a company that made a fortune, attracted some beautiful woman as a result, and lived the high life, albeit with severe emotional problems and violent mood swings. When he started to study the Bible the demon spirit, enraged, left, and his company went bust and his wife left him within two weeks.

There is no doubt in my mind that many persons stricken with severe mental illness today are in fact victims of demon harassment and possession, since the symptoms are scarcely distinguishable, and it is not in the demons’ interest to give irrefutable proof of their existence. Forget movies like The Exorcist of any of that rubbish; the demons today enjoy the things they did back in Noah’s time, which are basically sex and violence in extremis. Barred from taking human form they must now get their kicks vicariously, either through instigating and fomenting these things and then watching, or in some cases, possessing a weak minded or spiritually sick person. Sometimes, many spirits will do this, in a cowardly and bullying mob, as in the case of the unfortunate demoniac in the country of the Gerasenes in Mark chapter 5; “We are Legion,’ said the demons, ‘because there are many of us.”

I remember once reading an interview with some woman who was supposedly a “psychic to the stars”. Most of the interview was nonsense but she said something very telling at one point, which was that often persons who are harassed by wicked spirits are persons who take drugs because, as she put it, taking drugs “opens up your aura.” I have no comment on auras or any other new age stuff like that but I do know that the Greek word translated spiritism, demonism, sorcery in the Bible, φαρμακία, literally means druggery.

The moral of this story: while you are almost certainly not going to encounter a demon in human form and are very unlikely to be harassed by them directly, unwise choices in entertainment, practises and substance abuse can call to them like a lighthouse in a storm. (Compare Matthew 12:43–45)

Your best defence against Satan [2] and the demons is to draw close to God through coming to know him by means of a study of his word the Bible. Satan, the Bible tells us, rules the world, but he will flee from those who oppose him. (1 John 5:19; James 4:7) Get rid of anything you may own to do with the occult, or with supposedly contacting the dead or the spirit realm, burning such items in the fire if possible. If you are harassed or tormented by wicked spirits, pray to God in Jesus’ name, out loud, using God’s name Jehovah, which the Bible tells us is a “strong tower”. (Proverbs 18:10)

Satan and the demons’ goal is to mislead as many people as possible, turning them away from God and from getting saved, since both Satan and the demons know they are doomed, and are very angry at the prospect. (James 2:19; Revelation 12:17) They want you to do anything but worship God in the manner He prescribes in the BIble. But their time is short, and their power, while great, is restricted. Those who draw close to and form a friendship with God need have no fear of the demons or of Satan, all of whom God is infinitely greater than. Indeed, the Bible tells us, that that is why the Son of God came, to break up the works of the Devil. (1 John 3:8)

I have no doubt that many reading this will scoff at it and laugh. Let them; I couldn’t care less. (2 Peter 3:3–7).
