“Mirrors have been historically viewed as mystical portals connecting the known and unknown, influencing various cultures’ practices and beliefs. From ancient Egyptian tombs to medieval European scrying, rituals across the globe perceive mirrors as gateways to spiritual realms. In modern times, while scientific understandings have shifted perceptions, mirrors still inspire fascination in cultural narratives. “ – Jeff O’Connor
One of my students messaged me today and asked the following, “I currently have mirrored doors on the closet of my Reiki room at home. I had been feeling some weird energies in there and I remembered your story about a mirror and your window being open. (The window is almost always open in my Reiki room). I did a cleansing and covered the mirrors recently and have noticed a huge difference! So I’m wondering what it is about mirrors that spirits use as an invitation. Do they see themselves in the reflection?
So to begin with, the story I told her…in the summertime when I’m sleeping when it is cool outside I like to open my window. In order to do this, I always take the mirror down which faces that window. I explained that it works for two reasons… what happens in the physical world also happens in the spiritual world. So on the one hand, I don’t need a mirror facing a window living in the city for obvious reasons. Anyone can be walking by, and have the ability to use the mirror to look around in the room. Some unethical people would perhaps see this as an invitation to let themselves in.
In the spiritual world, they see the open window which makes it easy to float right in, and the mirror looks like a means to keep moving through. Beings use mirrors as doorways and can let themselves in and out. Mirrors and windows are portals in a sense so that spirits can move through different dimensions.
My answer to my student was as follows:
“Windows and mirrors are portals that spirit can move through. I have one tiny mirror in my Reiki room which is behind a door, which I seal off with my Reiki power symbol.
When you are doing a Reiki treatment, it is raising the vibration so that any entities involved will want to leave.
A mirror or window enables them to slip through and come back later. If you close everything off, nothing can escape your attention. They have to go to the light if that is how you are directing them. Also,…mirrors and windows can let things in who either want to cause trouble or be crossed over”.
In my house, I have several mirrors, often facing windows because in a feng shui kind of way, they bounce more light into the room and I really like that. Spirit can move through things that have reflective surfaces like mirrors, windows, even televisions, and other glass things like cabinet reflections. It allows them to pass through to the next room through these things or to wherever spirits go.
At night though while I’m sleeping, and at times when I’m meditating, or when I’m feeling more vulnerable ie: if I’m sick or emotionally down a bit, I will close everything off. This prevents things from finding me with easy access. I don’t have my regular guard up like I do on a normal day at those times, so I’m more protective. Closing off the room naturally makes people feel safer usually. This is because we are interacting with the spirit world less.
Everybody interacts with the spirit world, not just Mediums. We have built-in intuitions that we follow, whether we are aware of them or not.
Have you ever left all the curtains open at night, and felt an uneasy feeling? This will often only go away if you close everything down. Why is that? What can happen in the physical world also happens in the spirit world. The uneasy feeling could be that someone could approach you that you can’t handle physically. We like to make this less likely to happen when we lock our doors and close our windows or blinds. The same is true in the spirit world. Protections to keep things out spiritually can be other things as well as door locks, and curtains.
To protect ourselves from lower vibrational entities we might keep some plants and crystals in the windows. This keeps the vibration high. We paint the window frames and door frames white. Ever noticed that? The white is a barrier that keeps entities out. True story, check it out when you walk around the neighborhood. Most window frames and door frames are painted white.
So open the windows to invite light, but close the windows and mirrors when you don’t want to invite darkness! I hope that helps clear up the windows and mirrors being portals.1

- While many people believe mirrors act as portals, there is no scientific evidence to support this. However, some scientists do believe in the possibility of a “mirror” or parallel universe.
- People likely believe mirrors are portals because mirrors are considered liminal spaces, or areas that are thought to make travel between the spirit world and physical realm easier. Other liminal spaces include windows and glass doors.
- Two mirrors facing each other are believed to create infinite images, which is what opens the portal between the spiritual and physical worlds. Scientifically, this is an optical illusion, as the mirrors absorb light with each reflection, limiting the number of visible images.2
