When does the soul enter the body? Is it the instant of conception? Weeks later, when the fetus begins to move? At birth with the first breath? Or could the soul come and go throughout pregnancy before fully “settling in”?

It’s a question that has fascinated philosophers, theologians, and spiritually curious people for thousands of years. Today, it’s still considered one of the most emotionally charged topics imaginable.

For some, the answer has profound implications for religion and ethics. For others, especially those of us interested in reincarnation, near-death experiences, and consciousness, it opens the door to an even bigger mystery… What exactly is the relationship between the soul and the body?

Reports of children with verified past-life memories, accounts of pre-birth experiences, and hundreds of (maybe thousands of, tbh) hypnosis cases have painted a somewhat complex picture that seems to point to a surprising answer. My research strongly suggests that while a future life is chosen before conception, the soul may not become fully connected to the body until later in pregnancy… or perhaps even after birth.

You gotta admit, tho, it’s pretty fascinating that all of these people are basically saying the same exact thing… and that’s what I want you to see for yourself.

How Does Science Answer the Question When Does the Soul Enter the Body?

Well, first of all, science has yet to fucking admit a soul exists. So there’s that. But that doesn’t mean research hasn’t been conducted on this question. It’s often labeled pseudoscience. Rude, but okay.

Just as a quick summary, if you’re new here, Dr. Ian Stevenson was a psychiatrist who spent decades traveling to different countries and thoroughly researching thousands of cases where kids claimed past life memories. The consistent patterns that emerged are fascinating, and some of the individual cases will blow your mind.

Other doctors and researchers have continued in his footsteps, such as Dr. Jim B. Tucker and the Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia. Then you have researchers like Dr. Bruce Greyson, who has tackled consciousness studies from a different angle, primarily exploring near-death experiences. His material supports the findings of Dr. Stevenson, Dr. Tucker, and others.

From Dr. Stevenson

In regard to the interval between death and rebirth, Dr. Ian Stevenson says, “The median interval varies… and ranges from four months… to 141 months… The median interval for 616 cases from ten different cultures was 15 months.” (from his book Children Who Remember Previous Lives)

So, that is really answering a different (but similar) question about how long it takes to reincarnate and/ or is reincarnation instant, questions I’ve answered in detail in other posts, if you’re interested. But what I want you to pay attention to is that he said the range starts around 4 months.

That means there isn’t always exactly 9 months between the death of the previous personality and the birth of the new one. Which then means that the soul was not always in the embryo/ fetus/baby’s body during the first part of the pregnancy. Additionally, Dr. Stevenson has acknowledged, “In a small number of cases, the subject was born before the person whose life he remembered died. (The intervals vary between a day or two and several years.)”

Now, that’s really a mind fuck for a lot of people (I get it), and it’s often used to dismiss reincarnation in general. But not so fast. Because what we’re about to see from the rest of the sources is that not only does a soul not have to enter a body at conception, there’s a thing called walk-in souls… when a new soul enters a body very late in life.

Famed Hypnotherapist Dolores Cannon Answers the Question, When Does the Soul Enter the Body?

I understand that many people have an even more difficult time accepting information that derives from a patient undergoing hypnosis than they do with the research of Dr. Stevenson. But hear me out. Researchers like Dolores Cannon, Dr. Helen Wambach, and Dr. Michael Newton aren’t basing their info on a single client or two.

They’ve conducted hundreds of sessions (possibly thousands, honestly), and pretty much all of their clients are saying the same things over and over again while in hypnosis. Plus, what a person says and believes in their normal waking state is often completely different from what they say in the sessions.

Okay, anyway, let’s get into the good stuff. This first part is a direct section from Dolores Cannon’s book Between Death and Life. It is a conversation between her and a client who is in a deep trance.

From a Client Session

Dolores: Well, when do you enter the new body?

[Client under hypnosis]: Sometimes before birth, sometimes at birth, sometimes a little after.

Dolores: Then you don’t have to be in the baby’s body before it is born?

[Client]: No. Some do not enter until days after the baby has been born. It depends on the lesson that must be learned…

Dolores: Do you mean the spirit just kind of hangs around the baby?

[Client]: Yes. Or some of those who entered will leave for short periods of time. Perhaps they are not wanting to stay… In most cases there is always a choice for the first short while about whether or not one must stay, or whether one decides that, for some reason, it is not right and decides to leave…

Dolores: … You said sometimes they can leave for a while and go back and forth. Is this safe for the body?

[Client]: Usually it is done when the body sleeps, and there is no great harm…

In answer to the question When does the soul enter the body, Dolores adds that she has noticed a distinct pattern after years of hypnosis sessions. Here is a section from her book Between Death and Life:

“I have taken many regressed subjects through the birth experience. It verifies what has already been explained, that the spirit will at times choose to observe the birth and enter the baby’s body after it has been born.

“Or they may decide to enter the baby while it is within the mother’s body and experience the physical birth. They do not like to be within the developing fetus; it is a cramped, uncomfortable feeling.

“… It is very strange to watch someone go through the actual birth process… They are aware of everyone’s thoughts and they don’t like being separated from the mother. Their first cries are in frustration at being unable to communicate with these strange new creatures in this new environment. Then softly, a wave of forgetfulness seems to sweep over them as their responses dull and the memories of the other planes and other existences fade away.”

What Seth Says about When a Soul Enters the Body

Who is Seth? Um, I don’t have the energy to go into that here, but if you really want to know, start with the books by Jane Roberts, The Seth Material and Seth Speaks. All of the quotes I’m about to list for you now come from that second book (Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul.)

“The reincarnating personality enters the new fetus according to its own inclinations, desires, and characteristics, with some built-in safeguards. However there is no rule, then, saying that the reincarnating personality must take over the new form prepared for it either at the point of conception, in the very earliest months of the fetus’s growth, or even at the point of birth.”

“Various methods of entry are adopted. If there is a strong relationship between the parents and the child-to-be, then the personality may enter at the point of conception if he is extremely anxious to rejoin them. Even here, however, large portions of self-awareness continue to operate in the between-life dimension.”

“In all cases the decisions have been made ahead of time, as I told you. The reincarnating personality is aware, therefore, when the conception for which it has been waiting takes place. And while it may or may not choose to enter at that point, it is drawn irresistibly to that time and point in space and flesh.”

Also, This

“You do not have completely empty shells of matter about to be filled, in that the new personality hovers in and about, particularly after conception and with greater frequency and intensity thereafter. The shock of birth has several consequences, however, that usually draw the personality full blast, so to speak, into physical reality. Before this, the conditions are fairly uniform. The body consciousness is nurtured almost automatically, reacting strongly but under highly controlled conditions.”

“When it enters at the point of birth, it is fairly independent, not yet identified with the form it has entered, and acting in a supportive role. If the personality entered at conception or sometime before birth, then it has to some extent identified with the body consciousness, with the fetus. It has already begun to direct perception — though perception has begun whether or not it is so directed — and it will experience the shock of birth in immediate, direct terms.”

When the Soul Does Enter the Body at Conception, Seth Says This

“In these circumstances, when the personality attaches itself at conception, there is almost without exception strong past-life connections between parents and child, or there is an unceasing and almost obsessional desire to return to the earthly situation — either for a specific purpose, or because the reincarnating personality is presently obsessed with earthly existence. This is not necessarily detrimental. The personality can simply realize that it takes to physical experience well, is presently earth-oriented, and finds earthly atmosphere a rich dimension for the growth of its own abilities.”

“Those mentioned earlier who enter at the point of conception are usually highly anxious for physical existence. They will, therefore, be more fully developed and show their individual characteristics very early. They seize upon the new body and already mold it.”

“Some personalities are drawn to enter at conception as a result of seemingly less worthy motives — greed, for example, or an obsessional desire that is partially composed of unresolved problems. Other personalities who never completely take to earthly existence may hold off full entry for some time, and even then always remain at a certain distance from the body. At the other end of the scale, before death the same applies, where some individuals remove their focus from physical life, leaving the body consciousness alone. Others stay with the body until the last moment. In the early days of infancy, there is not a steady focus of the personality in the body in any case.”

What Research from Psychologist Helen Wambach Reveals about When a Soul Enters the Body

Psychologist Helen Wambach, Ph.D., was probably best known for her decision to use hypnosis on whole groups of people to gather more data at once, rather than just one individual at a time (though she sometimes did that, too). The following excerpt comes from her book Life Before Life.

From Her Book

“The response of my subjects to the question: ‘When does your soul enter the fetus?’ provides an interesting answer to this question… among the 750 subjects were some practicing Catholics, many Christians, and others who believed that abortion was a form of murder. Yet the 750 subjects were nearly unanimous on one key point.

“They felt the fetus was not truly a part of their consciousness… Indeed they frequently reported that the fetal body was confining and restrictive, and that they preferred the freedom of out-of-body existence. It was with much reluctance that many of them joined their consciousness with the cellular consciousness of the newborn infant.

“When all the 750 cases were analyzed, 89% of all the subjects responding said that they did not become a part of the fetus of involved with the fetus until after six months of gestation. Even then, many subjects reported being “in and out” of the fetal body.

“… Nearly all subjects reported being aware, presumably telepathically, of their mother’s emotions before and during the birth… 33%, said that they did not join the fetus, or experience inside the fetus, until just before or during the birth process.”

Do you see what I mean, in how this is almost exactly what Dolores Cannon also reported about her clients?? Wild.

Insight from Dr. Michael Newton on When a Soul Enters the Body

Spiritual regressionist Michael Newton, Ph.D., is best known for his technique to regress people not just to past lives but to the between-lives state of existence, called LBL Hypnotherapy. “My subjects say if they were to compare the moment of birth with that of death, the physical shock of being born is much greater.” (Fun fact, our boy Seth said the same thing in some of his books.)

“… Depending upon the inclinations of the particular soul involved, the connection may be early or late in the mother’s pregnancy. I have had cases where souls times their arrival at the last minute, during delivery… My findings indicate even those souls who join the baby early seem to do a lot of traveling outside the mother’s womb during her term… Besides leaving at the moment of death, souls may also come and go when the body is sleeping, in deep meditation, or under an anesthetic in surgery. The soul’s absences are much longer in cases of severe brain damage and coma.”
