Can an other-worldly spirit literally call your phone?
Skeptics point out that most of these events can be chalked up to technical malfunctions, signal interference, or the psychological phenomenon of pareidolia (finding patterns in random noise). However, paranormal investigators and spiritual mediums believe ghosts can interact with cell phones, usually by manipulating electromagnetic energy.
While spirits cannot physically swipe screens, they are thought to trigger voice assistants, cause phantom calls, and generate static-filled audio.
- Manipulating Frequencies: Proponents believe spirits can alter the electromagnetic fields (EMF) that phones rely on, causing batteries to drain rapidly or triggering random glitches.
- Phantom Calls and Texts: There are numerous accounts of people receiving mysterious voicemails—sometimes featuring the voices of deceased loved ones—or texts originating from blocked or impossible numbers.
- Digital Divination: Many users on forums like Reddit Paranormal share experiences of phones calling on their own, vibrating without notifications, or playing specific songs unexpectedly
- Paranormal Apps: There are mobile applications designed to detect “ghosts.” Some, like Ghost Tube or Spirit Talker, attempt to utilize the phone’s internal sensors (magnetometer, accelerometer) to map out spirit activity or formulate words based on environmental data.1
The internet is full of stories about people who have experienced calls that cannot be explained. Every now and then, media depicts a tale or two. The old Twilight Episode is just such a scenario. Here are a few clips from that episode:
Many people believe spirits and ghosts try to contact the living. One way they may do this is through electronic devices. Phones, televisions, radios, and even computers can be used as a channel for spiritual communication.
It may sound strange, but there are stories from people all over the world who have witnessed unexplained things with their electronics. Some hear voices through static. Others get phone calls from numbers that do not exist. And some even see their writing or text files change without anyone touching them.
Spirits are often described as pure energy. Unlike humans, they have no body. But electronic devices run on energy, too. That makes them the perfect tools for a spirit to connect with the physical world.
It is believed that spirits use the energy in electronic devices to send messages. A sudden screen glitch, a voice in white noise, or a phone lighting up on its own may be more than just a technical issue. These could be signs of a spiritual presence. Many experts in paranormal studies say that ghosts often show up when emotions are high or when someone is open to receiving a message. This is when devices may act strangely or even deliver direct communication.2
A paranormal expert in Britain, Phil Hayes, has claimed that ghosts are trying to contact the living through mobile phones, with the number of mystery calls attributed to them rising by 43% in the last four years.
Statistics show two thirds of all paranormal phenomena feature sounds, with just 20% being actual sightings of ghosts and 15% based on smell.
The study by Tesco Mobile revealed Paranormal Research UK have seen a 70% upsurge in paranormal evidence in the last year due to people using their phones.
“We’d recommend those brave enough to capture any spooky sightings should MMS or email their pics to the paranormal society for investigation,” Lance Batchelor, CEO of Tesco Mobile said.
“Keep your camera phone on the highest quality resolution setting and use the recorder to capture the noise of any spectral sounds,” he added.3
