Evil spirits are referred to in both the Old and New Testaments but are often called by other names such as “unclean spirits” or “impure spirits,” “deceiving spirits” or “lying spirits,” “demonic spirits,” and “demons.” In all cases, evil spirits are malevolent supernatural beings. Evil spirits work against God, but God in His sovereignty can choose to use evil spirits to carry out His plans and purposes, demonstrating that He is Ruler over all the universe.

Many cultures have their own versions, such as daevas in Zoroastrianism or oni in Japanese folklore, which are malevolent supernatural entities that hinder humans. Some spirits are associated with causing natural disasters, disease, and nightmares. Others are believed to inhabit specific places or cause harm through different means. Belief systems often include ways to protect oneself from these spirits, such as using amulets, performing rituals, or seeking refuge in a deity.

In some modern interpretations, evil spirits are seen as influences that are responsible for negative emotions like fear, anxiety, or addiction, and believers are encouraged to actively resist them. Some modern scholars propose that biblical accounts of “evil spirits” might be the ancient authors’ way of understanding mental illness, physical sickness, or other behavioral changes, though many believers maintain they are literal spiritual entities.

Types of evil spirits vary across different traditions and mythologies, but can include demonic entities like fallen angels, specific named demons such as Leviathan or Asmodeus, spirits associated with specific vices like revenge or lust (succubi/incubi), and primal chaotic forces. Some systems also categorize spirits by function, such as lying spirits, spirits of idolatry, or spirits that inflict disease and torment.

Classification by origin and nature

Demons/Fallen Angels:

Supernatural beings associated with malevolent forces, such as Satan, Lilith, and Asmodeus.

Spirits of the Dead:

Disembodied human spirits that may not rest or have unfinished business.

Nature Spirits:

Entities that exist in nature, like elemental spirits or deities of chaos and destruction.

Chaos Monsters:

Primordial creatures representing disorder, such as Tiamat, Typhon, and Leviathan.

Classification by function and vice

Revenge Spirits: Spirits focused on perpetuating violence and vengeance.

Lying Spirits: Spirits that cause deception or doctrinal error.

Seducing Spirits: Entities that lead people away from their faith, often through idolatry or other false doctrines.

Lustful/Seductive Spirits: Such as Succubi (female) and Incubi (male), which are associated with sexual temptation and draining life force.

Spirits of Idolatry: Spirits that promote the worship of false gods.

Detecting “evil spirits” typically involves observing changes in a person or environment, such as experiencing physical sensations like cold spots or dread, observing unexplained disturbances like moving objects or odd sounds, and noticing negative emotional shifts like increased anger or anxiety. Additionally, some religious and spiritual beliefs suggest that certain mental states (like severe anxiety or suicidal thoughts), behaviors (like engaging in the occult), and supernatural experiences can indicate a presence.

Remedies:

Practices like prayer, repentance, reading scripture, and fasting are described as ways to combat or release oneself from their influence. To rid evil spirits, spiritual and religious practices like prayer, chanting or cleansing rituals such as smudging are recommended. You can also focus on improving your personal environment and mindset by keeping your home clean and well-ventilated, engaging in positive activities like meditation or yoga, and avoiding negative influences.

A clean and well-ventilated space can help clear negative energy. Ensure there is plenty of natural light, as sunlight is considered strong against negative spirits. Participate in practices that cleanse your mind and body, such as yoga, meditation, or spending time in nature, which can help create positive energy and “crowd out” negative thoughts. Be mindful of foul language and negative influences in your life and avoid listening to people who use them.
